What is a Living Book?

A living book is written in a way that draws the reader emotionally and intellectually into the subject. The author displays a passion for their subject and they are often an authority in their field. Living books pass on their readers' great ideas and inspire them to want to learn/wonder about the subject more. Living books do not list facts, or dates, and present dry information, rather intertwine important information into stories, narratives, and cleverly written conversations. They do not talk down or moralise their young audience. They can be fiction or non-fiction, chapter or storybooks.

“One more thing is of vital importance; children must-have books, living books. The best is not too good for them; anything less than the best is not good enough. And if it is needful to exercise economy, let go of everything that belongs to soft and luxurious living before letting go of the duty of supplying the books, and the frequent changes of books, which are necessary for the constant stimulation of the child’s intellectual life.” Charlotte Mason
